Feeding and Diet

Sugar Glider Diets and Downfalls:

Before we get down to a specific diet we have found quite successful let me tell you a sad stories. The facts are real but the names have been changed to protect the innocent and the situations are actual situations we have encountered over the last several years. A client of ours in Arkansas bought a Sugar Glider from me one Christmas. We delivered his baby to him without incident and every one was happy, in fact, you might say they lived happily ever after, or at least would have until.... they went to a famous pet product chain store and the happy glider owner asked a person who worked there if they had any feed or a diet that he could feed his sugar glider? The person at the store suggested they might try hamster feed, after all he surmised; they are seedeaters like hamsters. So my client bought the hamster feed, which the Sugar Glider did like and he did eat. However, 10 days later the glider died. It was only after several calls and many questions that I found this out. Remember bird food, cat food, and other foods formulated for other exotic is not acceptable long term for a Sugar Glider. Their metabolism requires certain vitamins, minerals, and protein plus their eucalyptus. These specific items are all found in foods blended specifically for Sugar Glider. WE use, market and recommend the BRISKY Sugar Glider Diet. The folks at BRISKY have their own colony of Sugar Glider for the dietary veterinarians to use in consistent improvement of their product.Below is the Diet we Use and Recommend to all our customers:

From our experience with our breeder stock we have devised a diet that is very efficient, economical, and healthy for Sugar Gliders of all ages. We have proven to ourselves through not only the general health but the breeding frequency and health of the offspring the following nutritional suggestion are of sound judgment for the well being of your Sugar Glider.

We keep a small amount of the palletized commercial Sugar Glider food in the cage 24/7 along with fresh water in a commercial gravity fed water bottle. REMEMBER, once the palletized food is chewed up or soiled, replace it with fresh and if necessary in a clean feeding dish. One of the most common diseases in Sugar Gliders is Giardia, an intestinal parasite generate by one eating it one feces, so keep that food replaced when soiled. The palletized food offers all the special vitamins and mineral along with the eucalyptus in a concentratedform for the species, eliminating the need for special mixtures of food and lives or freezes dried insects and larva. Although we have never feed our breeders live or freeze dried insects and larva, we have had feedback from your customers that in doing so they have noticed a slight tendency for the Sugar Glider to become more aggressive in its mannerism. On a daily basis, usually in mid-evening we feed our Breeders a mixture of FRESH vegetables and fruit. We emphasize FRESH as opposed to canned due to additive that may be harmful. Usually a heaping teaspoon full per animal of vegetables along with a slice of fruit or several grapes is sufficient. Do not over feed. We have found that the frozen mixed vegetables (corn, peas, carrots, green bean mix) are an excellent choice and very economical. Just thaw out enough for several days and keep refrigerated until feeding time. We substitute once or twice a week the fruit with a spoonful of yogurt per animal. We also sprinkle GLIDERAID on the vegetables once a week and for lactating females we sprinkle some BOOSTER MILK on their vegetables twice a week. We also sprinkle a small amount of the PROTEIN SUPPLEMENT on the food twice a week. Any brand of calcium supplement should be used with discretion. Too much calcium can be just as destructive as not enough. Excessive calcium can produce calcium deposits, not enough can result in deteriorated bone structures. We market, recommend and use OF CALCIUM POWDER REMEDY (CPR). Nuts or other high-fat foods should be limited. Dairy products excluding yogurt and cottage cheese should be avoided. Leafy and or gasses vegetables should be avoided in the diets of BEWARE!

Never! Take advice except from a breeder Veterinarian concerning ANY Exotic Pet. And especially from a Pet Store owner or person(s) that doesn't sell or understand Sugar Gliders.
